Our first away match, unchartered territory, new positions for players both experienced and new meant there were quite a few nerves. That and with the confusion from who was actually refereeing the game meant that the Valkyries took full advantage of the shaky start that Phoenixes had.
The Phoenixes came back with a try from Lisa Pringle who was trialling a new position at 10.
She also scored the second try for Saltash to make us level, with Jess ‘Spike’ Pike getting the conversion taking us to lead the Valkyries 10-12.
This match was a tough game for all, with St Austell having a few injuries throughout the game. However, they were determined and managed to get another try in with 10 minutes to go taking the score to 15-12. However, Phoenixes lived up to their name, by coming up from behind and Katie Hall scoring a try at the very last minute, making the final score 15-17 to Saltash. A bravely fought match which saw lots of tired ladies but every single one of them smiling.
Forward of the Match- Lauren Marsh who was up in St Austell’s faces whoever had the ball, making them have to think fast for the ball.
Back of the Match - Ayesha ‘Ikea’ Slader who made some insane try saving tackles and defending that line.
Player of the Match- Maya Phipps who was in a brand new position and smashed it out of the park, making some incredible tackles and changing positions halfway through the match without batting an eyelid.
Honourable mention- Lisa Pringle who not only scored 2 tries today, but played at number 10. Lisa is such respected and experienced member of this team and today, showed her willingness to try something new. And she absolutely nailed it!!
A well fought match won by Ashes and supported once again by CF Building and Landscaping, The Beauty Collective and Westcountry Fabrication LTD.
A massive thank you to these and to the supporters who travelled down to support the team.
Next Phoenixes match 17th November away to Camborne Uni.
